On the southern edge of the "Enchanted Circle" scenic byway, Taos is a high-altitude oasis in the dry New Mexico desert. Four resorts serve the Taos area, with nearly 2,500 skiable acres ringing this tiny mountain town. Taos Ski Valley, with 51 percent of its 1,294 acres reserved for expert runs, is one of the last skier-only havens in North America. Banned snowboarders are better off at Angel Fire, where two terrain parks, a halfpipe and a four-acre glade area await. Sipapu Resort, just south of Taos, is a 200-acre, family-friendly mountain. On the opposite side of the "Enchanted Circle", Red River Ski Area offers a small, uncrowded option for all skill levels. Taos is served by a regional airport and is 135 miles north of the Albuquerque International Airport.
